According to officials, Archangel-Ortiz entered the hospital’s intensive care unit around 10:35 a.m., armed with a pistol and zip ties, and proceeded to take multiple staff members hostage. Law enforcement arrived on the scene minutes later and confronted the suspect at approximately 10:43 a.m.

During the confrontation, Archangel-Ortiz zip-tied a female staff member before officers engaged him. Five others—including a doctor, a nurse, a custodian, and two additional officers—suffered injuries before police shot and killed the suspect as he was holding an ICU employee hostage.
UPMC Memorial Hospital confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, “We have received confirmed reports of a gunman at UPMC Memorial and shots fired. The gunman is deceased, and no patients have been injured. The hospital is now secure but is on divert.”
Attack Was Preplanned, Authorities Say
York County District Attorney’s Office revealed that Archangel-Ortiz had visited the hospital’s ICU earlier in the week for a “medical purpose involving another individual” and appeared to have deliberately targeted the staff. Despite the violence, no patients were harmed in the attack.
Governor Josh Shapiro addressed the tragedy on social media, writing, “This morning in York County, we saw the best and worst of humanity. In the midst of senseless violence, law enforcement, first responders, and medical professionals showed true heroism.”
The investigation into the motive behind the attack is ongoing as the community mourns the loss of Officer Duarte and prays for the recovery of those injured.
